The top 30 riders from the Grand Prix qualified for the Special and there was drama all the way as reigning European Champion Adelinde Cornelissen (NED) and Jerich Parzival retained their title despite going wrong with the eighth movement and hearing the dreaded judge’s bell. However she recovered her composure brilliantly and racked up the marks in the second half of her test to edge out the find of these Championships Carl Hester (GB) and the 10 yr old Uthopia who probably lost this title when it all went wrong in the two Tempi changes. Britain’s Laura Bechtolsheimer and the 16 yr old Mistral Hojris produced a much better performance than in the Grand Prix to claim the Bronze.

With the top 15 scores from the Special qualifying for the grand finale of these Championships the capacity crowd was treated to some sensational dressage and they were not disappointed as each of the medal winners achieved personal bests.

However Gold medal winner Adelinde Cornelissen (NED) and Jerich Parzival were in a class of their own and this time there were no mistakes as she posted a score of 88.839%.

The Netherlands came to these Games as overwhelming favourites for the team title with their effort being spearheaded by the amazing Moorlands Totilas. Despite losing top rider Adelinde Cornelissen after her horse Jerich Parzival had blood in the mouth and was disqualified, they were far too strong for the rest, with Great Britain winning their first ever World Team Medal in second, after a brilliant test by Laura Bechtolsheimer, pushing the Germans into third.

In the Grand Prix Special Moorlands Totilas was again far too strong for the opposition but again Laura Bechtolsheimer showed maturity beyond her years to win her second silver on Mistral Hojris, with the home crowd cheering Steffen Peters and Ravel into bronze position.

Fifteen combinations went through to the final event in the dressage competition, the Kur, which took place under floodlights in the Rolex stadium in front of a near capacity crowd.

The medals would go to the same 3 combinations as in the Grand Prix Special. First to go of the final five were Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris and they scored an excellent 85.35%. The USA favourite Steffan Peters and Ravel then put in a pleasing performance but not quite good enough to overtake the British rider with a score of 84.9%.

The final horse into the arena was the Dutch sensation Moorlands Totilas and he didn't disappoint producing a fabulous test for rider Edward Gal, securing the gold medal in emphatic style with a score of 91.80%, in what proved to be their last outing together.

The odds on favourite for this annual World title, Edward Gal and the astonishing Moorlands Totilas, headed a Dutch 1-2-3 in front of an ecstatic home crowd at ‘S-Hertogenbosch with a brilliant score of 89.8%. The Alltech FEI European Dressage Championships 2009 were held in Windsor, UK. This championships saw more maximum 10 marks given by the judges than ever before. There was a feverish type hype around Edward Gal's "Wonder Horse", Moorlands Totilas and the 9 year old did not let anyone down. He scored 32 maximum 10 marks in the Special and still lost to Adelinde Cornelissen riding Parzival but then he broke a record in the Kur with a score of 90.75%.

In the team competition, The Netherlands were always going to be too strong for the rest but GB (the host nation) were in ecstacy after securing team Silver ahead of the Germans. Top rider, Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris grabbed a dramatic Bronze in the Special.

Once again the two great dressage riders of the world battled it out for Gold in Hong Kong, at the 2008 Olympics. After Isabell Werth (GER) and Satchmo had posted the best score in the Grand Prix, it was not surprising that she would also come out top in the Grand Prix Special but Anky Van Grunsven (NED) is not the reigning Olympic, World Cup and European Champion for nothing. After Satchmo made an unexpected mistake in the special, the margin was never enough to hold the "Queen of the Kur", Anky Van Grunsven, in the final discipline as she showed all of her magic with Salinero to retain her Olympic title in style. All the top tests are shown in full with viewers being given the option of watching the Kur tests without commentary.

Germany lost their invincibility to the Netherlands in the 2007 FEI European Championships, so all eyes were on these two teams for the Gold and Silver with the USA, Denmark, Sweden and Great Britain battling for Bronze at the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong.
